Taking Keto Supplements

The Ketogenic diet allows you to benefit from the extraordinary metabolic efficiency, general health, and longevity benefits of fasting, but without having to starve yourself. When you are starving, engaging in a purposeful fast, or adhering to a nutritional ketosis eating pattern, your cells prefer to burn fat and ketones.

Fat and ketones burn efficiently and quickly in the body and have been the preferred human fuel in our bodies since the age of our hunter-gather ancestors.

Going Keto has many nutritional and health benefits and doing so doesn’t necessarily require the use of supplements. That said keto supplements can maximize your results by accelerating weight and fat loss and boosting your energy level. I have always been an advocate of real food option whenever it comes to diet but sometimes I find it is necessary to supplement my diet with other options. It is why I still use a protein powder in my smoothies. Sometimes that extra little boost is what you need to help kickstart your diet or to supplement it.

Let’s take a look at the most popular keto supplements available to us. And some recommended foods that may also kick-start your keto journey.

Top Keto Supplements

The best supplements for keto diet can be broken down into two categories, those that are meant to raise your level of ketones for the keto diet, and those that contain essential fats or nutrients. Even further the keto supplements that are meant to raise the level of ketones in your body can be broken down into two categories, or three if you count the ones that contain the word keto but don’t do anything. Those two categories are keto salts and keto esters.

Keto Supplements: Keto Salts

Naturally-derived compounds that simply mix sodium (and/or potassium, or calcium) with BHB to improve absorption. Commercially available supplements are all made from ketone salts currently. These are also sometimes called “Ketone Mineral Salts” of “BHB Mineral Salts”.

Keto Supplements: Keto Esters

Synthetically-made compounds that link an alcohol to a ketone body, which is metabolized in the liver to a ketone. Ketone esters are used primarily in research (at the moment) for testing their efficacy in elevating ketone body levels. They also are reportedly very unpleasant tasting, according to those who have experimented with them.

When you embark on a journey of keto living you will certainly start to notice certain deficiencies in your diet if you do not carefully plan. Be sure to check out my complete guide to the keto diet to get you started before considering taking keto supplements.

1. Keto // OS by Pruvit

Typically on the keto diet, your body produces endogenous ketones, on the opposite side Keto // OS is a powdered drink mix keto supplement that provides your body with exogenous ketones. Taking a product like Keto // OS provides ketone bodies(usually within 30 minutes of taking) for you to burn as fuel right away, whether or not you’re in ketosis. Some people will still take ketone supplements simply for the energy benefits. I personally prefer to take them within 30 minutes of a workout, or if I have maybe gone a little over my carb requirement.

Being made from exogenous ketones, Keto // OS provides the same benefits that endogenous ketones naturally offer your body: long-lasting energy, improved cognitive function, athletic performance, and mental focus, fat burning, and accelerated weight loss.

To be clear, exogenous ketones aren’t a replacement for the real food or the healthy fats of the keto diet. While exogenous ketone supplements will raise the ketone bodies in your blood, they’re simply providing your body with a fuel source, rather than putting you in the metabolic state of ketosis.

Benefits of  Taking Keto // OS

Wake up feeling recharged, fresh, reduced brain fog and increased awareness. The BHB or Beta Hydroxybuyrate provides fast and sustained energy from within.

2. 7 Keto DHEA

Just like ketones themselves, 7 Keto DHEA is actually produced by your body naturally even though it can be considered a keto supplement.

7 Keto DHEA is a metabolite of DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone), which is produced by your brain and adrenal glands (1). It acts as a growth hormone and can help stimulate the production of other hormones that play a role in burning fat and increasing lean muscle mass, such as the thyroid hormone (2).

People take 7-keto-DHEA to speed up the metabolism and heat production to promote weight loss. 7-keto-DHEA is also used to improve lean body mass and build muscle, increase the activity of the thyroid gland, boost the immune system, enhance memory, and slow aging.

Benefits of  Taking 7 Keto DHEA

DHEA promotes weight loss by speeding metabolism.

3. Fish Oil/Krill Oil

Not only are fatty fish one of the best foods to eat to stay in ketosis, but they’re rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids, which are one of nature’s best anti-inflammatories.

One of the cautions when following the keto diet is that some fatty foods (especially dairy) are rich in omega-6s, which we need in small amounts, but can become pro-inflammatory when we consume too many of them (4). When we consume too many omega-6s and not enough omega-3s, this can promote systemic inflammation, which may play a role in the onset of many chronic illnesses and diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and arthritis (5).

Benefits of  Taking 7 Keto DHEA

Natural anti-inflammatory contributes to keto diet high fat intake requirements.

4. MCT Oil

MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides) provides 14 grams of fat per tablespoon. Unlike long-chain triglycerides—the type of fat most prevalent in foods—MCTs are a unique source of fat because they enter the bloodstream quickly, which allows them to serve as a rapidly available fuel source for both the brain and muscles. Adding pure MCTs throughout your day can help you make the transition smoothly, while also providing steady energy.

With a shorter chain length than fatty acids, they take a much ‘quicker’ pathway (think of it as a shortcut) when they’re metabolized, which allows them to be converted to ketones and used for fuel, rather than being stored as fat.

In other words, MCTs are extremely beneficial on the keto diet for energy and staying in a fat burning state.

Coconut oil is by far the richest natural source of MCTs — however, taking a fractionated MCT supplement, such as BulletProof’s Brain Octane oil (a blend of coconut and palm oil), offers a more concentrated dose of MCTs.

Benefits of  MCT Oil

Beneficial on the keto diet for energy and staying in a fat burning state.

5. Perfect Keto

Perfect Keto is another exogenous keto supplement derived from ketone salts. It offers the same benefits as Keto // OS by raising blood ketone levels.

When it comes to Perfect Keto vs. Keto // OS, many reviewers say the products work the same. The key differences seem to be price point (Perfect Keto is a lower price point than Pruvit), and flavor variety.

Key Benefits of Taking Perfect Keto on the Keto Diet:

Energy, focus, concentration, cognitive function, improved athletic performance, accelerated weight loss, can help you stay in ketosis.

6. Essential Minerals: Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium

One of the biggest concerns with drastically reducing your carb consumption is not getting enough electrolytes. This is because you’re cutting out the best natural sources of electrolytes, which are starchy fruits and vegetables.

Sodium is a naturally occurring mineral that helps your body regulate water levels, blood pressure, and acid-base balance. It is instrumental in regulating electrical signals between nerves and allowing brain cells to function properly. Additionally, it helps support the adrenal glands on top of the kidney in producing many hormones.

Potassium is an essential macromineral in human nutrition with a wide range of roles; including transmission of nerve impulses; contraction of cardiac and skeletal muscles; and production of energy. Potassium is the predominant electrolyte within cells and essential for maintaining proper cellular tonicity. The citrate salt of potassium has been shown to aid in the preservation of skeletal integrity.

Magnesium is another essential nutrient. Magnesium is an essential mineral in the body and plays a key role in many bodily functions, including support for nerve, muscle, and heart function. Magnesium also supports healthy bones and teeth and helps convert food into cellular energy.

Calcium is the primary mineral responsible for strong, healthy bones.

Key Benefits of Taking Perfect Keto on the Keto Diet:

Avoid symptoms of the keto flu, healthy muscle function.

Where to Buy:

Kettle and Fire Bone Broth

Ultima Replenisher

7. L-Glutamine

Glutamine is an amino acid or a building block of simple and complex proteins. Because your body synthesizes glutamine on its own, glutamine is not considered essential. However, if you are engaged in high-volume athletic training, glutamine may become conditionally essential, as your levels will deplete faster than your body can synthesize more.

Cutting carbs means you may not be eating as many antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, so supplementing with a powerful antioxidant like glutamine may help prevent cellular damage.

The dietary sources of glutamine include especially the protein-rich foods like beef, chicken, fish, dairy products, eggs, cabbage, spinach, c, Brussel sprouts, celery, kale and fermented foods like miso.

Benefits of Taking L-Glutamine

Prevents free radical damage from intense physical activity, boosts immunity, reduces recovery time between workouts.

Where to Buy:

Optimum Nutrition Glutamine Powder

8. Vitamin D

While not essential to keto it is certainly worth mentioning here.

It’s estimated that over one billion people worldwide are deficient in vitamin D, which is why this vitamin is not only recommended as a keto supplement but a supplement for most people to take— especially those who live in colder climates or don’t spend much time outdoors.

When trying to enjoy the vitamin D befits the best option is always going to be sunlight. It is free and abundantly available. However, it isn’t always an option for some of us. And during the winter month, it makes it even harder for us to get it. You can also try to get more of it through diet as well which should be a part of any healthy eating plan.

Benefits of Taking L-Glutamine

Electrolyte absorption (calcium), immune system support.

Where to Buy:

Nordic Naturals Vitamin D3

Keto Supplements

While whole food will always be the preferred option when it comes to any diet plan sometimes supplements are necessary. To ensure your success ensure you are using a keto supplement that contains exogenous ketones (either Keto // OS or Perfect Keto). Also, make sure you are getting your daily macronutrient and micronutrient requirements. Using good bone broth will ensure you are getting your mineral requirements and help you to avoid the keto flu. And as always consume healthy sources of fat such as MCT oil.
