Golden Milk

Ayurvedic Medicine

Previously I covered the idea of eating for your body type in this post. In the article, I discussed an ancient understanding known as Ayurvedic Medicine.

Ayurvedic medicine (also called Ayurveda) is one of the world’s oldest medical systems. It originated in India more than 3,000 years ago and remains one of the country’s traditional healthcare systems. Its concepts about health and disease promote the use of herbal compounds, special diets, and other unique health practices.

In Ayurveda, dairy products have been used for millennia as a way to promote health. Yogurt and lassi are natural sources of live probiotic cultures, ghee is the preferred cooking oil, and milk is revered for its ability to promote ojas in the body.

In Sanskrit, ojas translates into vigor and is the basis for physical, mental, and spiritual health. Ojas is the pure and subtle substance that is the most refined byproduct of healthy digestion. It actually takes the body about a month to create ojas from a meal that you consume.

What this means to you and me is basically for thousands of years people have been using whole foods, and natural elements to help people treat ailments and live healthy natural lives. Into today’s society, we are always looking for the next pill. Here at NightOwl.FIT I always try to push more natural approaches to health.

The Power of Golden Milk

Milk and honey, both key ingredients in golden milk, promote the production of ojas, and turmeric is a key medicinal tool in Ayurveda. Recently turmeric has gained the recognition of the scientific community for its potential for lowering cholesterol, reducing blood sugar in diabetics, relieving arthritis, supporting liver function, improving digestion, reducing menstrual cramps, and reducing inflammation in the colon. Its broad medicinal uses are likely due to its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antioxidant qualities.

Golden Milk and Why You’ll Love It

I recently discovered this new addition to my health arsenal and it has done wonders for my sleep. It is just another tool in my belt.

From the Gaia Herbs website:

Gaia Herbs Golden Milk is a satisfying, plant-based blend of turmeric, dates, and herbs (black pepper, cardamom, vanilla, and ashwagandha) inspired by the traditional Ayurvedic recipe that has been savored for centuries for its support of the mind and body. The delicious mix comes in a convenient powder form that is designed to be stirred into regular milk or plant-based milk alternatives. Golden Milk is intended to be sipped warm and is perfect for people who want to relax and unwind at the end of a busy day with something tasty and nourishing. This product is vegan and gluten-free with no GMOs or soy.

Quick Golden Milk Recipe

  1. Add ¼ tsp of turmeric powder to ¼ cup of water in a pot and heat until it becomes a paste—stirring occasionally to help dissolve the turmeric powder
  2. Add 1 cup milk (either use organic raw cow/goat milk, unhomogenized organic cow/goat milk, organic almond milk, or organic coconut milk) to the turmeric paste
  3. Add 1-2 tsp of either ghee, coconut oil, or almond oil to the milk mixture
  4. Add a pinch of either cardamom powder or cinnamon powder (optional)
  5. Add 1 tsp of honey once the milk has cooled enough to touch

Don’t want to make your own. You can also purchase a golden milk powder that can be added to any milk. Try mixing it with Ghee and some honey for a perfect treat.
